while these pictures are definitely insufficient to encapsulate the entire year's event,

has been our family for the entire year, guiding us through our j1 life.

now as for our dearest graduated seniors, we sincerely thank you for being a great part of our lives, without which things like STJ and after class bench life would not be as fulfilling.

Our senior fac comm and faculty teachers, we simply can't express enough gratitude for teaching us the ways of this awesome faculty and be rest assured that we will pass this great spirit on to the new batch of J1s in 2010 as they step forth in their Hwa Chong journey.

It all started as a very sunny day, where the ghost of JU-ON was

mysteriously floating right in the middle of central plaza

THEN THE RAIN CAME...

so Ju-On moved into the inner plaza and monsters of all sorts and sizes started to appear in the inner plaza.

Like they say, good things come in pairs. Even ghouls.

Yin... and Yang??

With the thunderstorms as our background sound effects, our EMCEEs, Yu Chen Xing from 09S64 and Teh Zitao from 09S62, challenged the unpredictable.

They DRESSED UP.

They DANCED.

The MAD J1 BBOYS were on their head, legs and hands. They were flipping, spinning and taking the crowd by storm.

They had the formations...

and were totally rocking the beat and getting the audience on their feet. LITERALLY.

The food came in batches, spread out in a very nice buffet-styled layout.

People were helping themselves to the food.

They obviously had a fun time with the food, because they turned it from...

to...

Then, we had our movie screening. Ju-on -The Grudge

where screams filled the entire inner plaza for no reason, like when the ...

in the bottom right hand corner of the picture :P

RAIN or SHINEE, we are your Athena Faculty Committee and we sincerely hope you have enjoyed the event.

while the weather wasn't exactly nice to us on that day,
we do hope that the event was still as awesome
and YOU had a whole load of fun and scare for a halloween night.

We would definitely like to thank some people, without whom this event would not have been possible.

FOS (Festival of Sports) 2009

It was an unforgettable afternoon of fun as the four faculties came together for the annually Festival of Sports. On this day, 27th of October, Hwa Chong's campus was flooded by an ocean of colours, namely GREEN, red, yellow and blue. Just like any sporting event, there had to be winners and losers at the end of the day. Yet, what really mattered to us was the fighting spirit of the athletes :D. Though some of them were at a disadvantage, NONE of them gave up. For that, everyone is a winner :)

Guess what sport our fac prince was playing? It was by no way a coincidence that girls swarmed the volleyball courts.

And to all supporters who came down, thanks a lot for helping to cheer your friends on! Seriously it’s a whole lot better to be playing with the support of your friends! Thank you very much for your time!

Last, but most importantly, we (fac comm) really really really hope that everyone had fun! It was a wonderful afternoon, indeed.

The much awaited and critically acclaimed faculty event of the year:

Ju-On, otherwise known in the hanyupinyin form as zhu3on1, is a Halloween-themed faculty event where all Athenians are invited to a splendid steamboat buffet and a magnificent feast. The night will be filled with fun, laughter and excitement as a whole series of thrilling games and performances have been lined up just for you.

On the 20th of October 2009, the faculty of Athena gathered to watch representatives from their classes eat donuts;

Large sugary donuts;

Large sugary donuts hanging off the end of a bright green raffia string in the hands of their fellow classmates on the bridge.

Chowed down using only their mouth.

In the fastest speed possible. In misery. In frustration. And for some, in glee.

Presenting... our Donut King. :D

Now just when we were expecting to sink our teeth into and fill our empty grumbling stomachs with a nice, sugary-sweet, fresh, crisp donut, we encountered one small tiny twist.

No sugar, no creamy fillings, no oreo, no chocolate, no hazelnut, no tiramisu, no sliced almonds, no flavours.

Yup, that's right, our donuts came... topless. Plain. Just a tad bit boring.

Or... maybe not so boring.

Armed with Peanut butter, Chocolate spread, Milo and Honey Stars cereal, Blueberry jam, Kaya, Rainbow rice, Maple syrup, White chocolate chips, and Oreo, we Athenians got creative.

1. Come out of your closet (you muggers!)
2. lie on a horizontal surface (preferably soft and comfy)
3. clear your mind of SEQUENCES AND SERIES
4. close your eyelids
5. drift off into lala land

don't stay up too late just to mug and get sufficient REST/SLEEP.

It's time to honour the services they have provided to the Athenian student body. Successful nominees will be awarded during the upcoming graduation day.

due to the h1n1 situation, many adhoc activities we've planned could not be approved, so sorry for that! hope we can gain your understanding and please do bear with it. :)

in the meantime, we'll be working on other aspects such as the new faculty blog design, where our pub i/cs have been working really hard before and after block tests to bring it to you! also, the new faculty shirt design for our juniors next year! when we have a few designs, we will be displaying them here and hope you all give comments or preferences on which designs you prefer on the tagboard! On 20^th May 2009, otherwise known endearingly as Combined Sports Meet 09, the Faculty of Athena formed a fearsome block of green among the many colours filling up the stands of the terraces of the school field. The Faculty of Athena, had a relatively high concentration of green people wearing their favourite faculty shirts, despite the popular belief that PE attire was to be worn. It is with deepest regret to announce that this phenomenon caused many other people to be GREEN with ENVY.

This fearsome block of green/white took the terraces by storm when it started cheering its very first cheer. This fearsome block of green rocked the terraces with their loud and undeniably irresistible voices. This fearsome block of green, grew even stronger and larger as the highly anticipated Faculty Races drew closer. Seniors from the Faculty even placed down their coveted Physics SPA notes and clambered to the stands to support their favourite athletes, mostly donned in green by pure coincidence.

It was time for the Faculty Races.

The Faculty Heads, along with the Faculty Committee 09/10, led the faculty in cheering for their CTmates, their faculty mates and their schoolmates, as one CT, as one faculty and as one Hwachong. “A-A-Athena!” This fearsome block cheered as its athletes took off and zoomed past the track. The athletes put their best foot forward and the results paid off. They achieved highly commendable results.

For that, the Faculty of Athena is proud of them and all athletes who have fought tooth and nail, ran, jumped, thrown things for the glory of Athena. For that, we as one Athena, are proud of you.

Athena is also proud of the Athenians who cheered with us despite all odds on that day. Athena is proud of the seniors who took time off their mugging sessions for the gruelling Physics SPA to support us. Athena is proud of the people who wore their green faculty shirts proudly on that day, though the instructions were not exactly that.

For all that, Athena thanks you for just being there and being green. We hoped you had a jolly good time just spending time with your friends, rooting for your faculty mates and cheering your hearts out. We hope you had a wide GREEN on your face and enjoyed yourself on CSM.

Smile, because the grass is always greener on our side. (:

First of all, I need to apologise for this horribly late post. (we all had some catching up to do after the event :x)

Hi everyone, I am Linus, and together with Guo Dan (the other event I/C), we call ourselves LG, coz life's good with LG (hahahaha). With all sincerity, we thank everyone for coming, and we hope that everyone had lots of fun while getting to know a few Athenians better.

The Athena Faculty Committee 08-09 has come a long way since May last year and this is probably going to be the last you will hear of us. Many things have happened since we started, but I believe we can basically sum it up with the names of our past three events:

Back when we first started, people were doubtful of our capabilities because we didn't get to win that silly game known as the Faculty Shield Challenge. But we showed them that a Faculty goes far beyond material Faculty Points and Faculty Shields... who needs shields when you have a burning spirit? We demonstrated a Green Revolution, showed everyone GreenWorks, and made Athena the Envy of the Seven Seas :D

For the J2s, thank you for your continual support for our events.
For the J1s, thank you for bringing the spirit back to life. You guys have been the MOST enthusiastic, the MOST motivated bunch of people I've ever seen.
Since this is probably going to be the last time I am posting on the faculty blog, I would like to end it off with a personal touch, something I wrote on my blog the night after GreenWorks.

I turned around to face the crowd, and we led them in cheer, for the last time.
"Athena Ke-ba-ba"!
The words didn't even make sense to me, but as the crowd replied with equally silly words, that didn't seem to matter anymore
Then it ended, and we made our way off the stage.

"A-A-Athena!", the crowd began to cheer.

I smiled to myself as I hopped off our makeshift stage made of canteen tables that we brought to the central plaza with the help of many volunteers.
And I thought to myself, " We've done a good job."

A NEW TERM

Dear All!

Term TWO is here, albeit with much frustration and protest.

For the C2s! Most of us have one paper left. Chemistry! All the best everybody.

And for our C1s! It's term 2 already, and time has really passed since you first stepped into Hwa Chong yeah? For most of you guys CCA would have started, and for some of you who are running for council.. well you're running for council! And all the best to you people.

Do render your support to those running! They're gonna be the ones representing Athena on the school front, and two of them would eventually be our next Faculty Heads, something that i'm very sure everyone is extremely excited about. So do give those nominees a pat on the back when you see 'em.

Anyways, an advice from the seniors: DO NOT NEGLECT YOUR STUDIES! This goes out to every single one of you C1s alright?! Yes it sounds like nagging (it is) but you all will understand when you're in your second year.

Anyways C1s: hoodies will not be back so soon. Sorry for the wait guys. But we'll try as much as possible to return them to you ASAP.

Following the appeal for an ATHENIAN handphone theme, we now release the Athena Faculty Theme on SONY ERICSSON phones. (Actually we came up with this quite some time ago, we just haven't had the chance to release it.)

The preliminaries will be held between late March and May and the actual event will be on Wednesday, 20th May!

Do SIGN UP for as many events as possible! And just have FUN at it!

For those who have no sports background! DO NOT despair! Just play along with everyone and try it out! Participation points are given as long as you appear in your prelims! So let's ALL do this together, as one.

Our Story

A simple “Hello” brought 24 people together and a simple “Goodbye” brought the hearts of a whole faculty as one, writing a whole new chapter in Athena’s story.

Only 2 words can sum up all that I want to say to all: “Thank You”.

Without the dedication of the cast, crew, script writer, the teachers and all who have come to support Athena in the Dramafeste, it would not have been possible for us to show others what Athena is truly made of. 6^thMarch marked a whole new chapter for us in Dramafeste. For those who are unaware, Athena clinched 5 awards and 2 special mentions:

· Best Script

· Best Set

· Best Ensemble

· Best Supporting Actress

· Best Director

· Best dance routine

· Most straight looking gay—but don’t worry girls, he’s not!

As the saying goes台上一分钟，台下十年功 (direct translation: a minute on stage means ten years of work off stage). Well, we didn’t have the luxury of 10 years, it was only 2 weeks (and the play was roughly half an hour the last time we timed)! But having only 2 weeks to stage a performance is no small feat. This required much dedication, time and effort from everyone. And for this, I am sincerely grateful to the cast for staying in school till late for all rehearsals every day, the crew led by Linus and E-Hui for coming down to make the stunning props and Bob, our scriptwriter, for writing us this award winning script in like 5 days since we added in more characters like 2 weeks before the actual performance. I know everyone has been very busy, skipping training and CCA as well as braving the flu bug and cold virus to come down for rehearsals and prop making sessions. What could I have done without you all?!

I thank you once again for making my dream—our dream, come true, allowing Athena to shine in Dramafeste, in a way that seemed unimaginable.

This marks the start of a brand new chapter for Athena and this story will be continued by you…

I think thats an appropriate title after the extremely impeccably good performance ATHENA put up today. Well, yesterday, since its 130am now.

Its been close to two weeks since the first ever showcase of the Athena Fac Dance during orientation, before the EC meet Fac session for the very first time. Remember? Then, you Athenians had no idea what facdance was or what it was worth. To your DICs and to yourselves. But over time, most if not all of you slowly began to assimilate it into your school-lives. And again, most if not all of you would stay back after lessons to learn and practice the fac dance diligently. Though turn up wasn't as much as we had expected, i think i speak for my fellow DICs in saying we thoroughly enjoyed teaching each and every single one of you.

Fastforward 2 weeks and its facdance comp, the opportunity for all of you to put all your efforts to good use. And i believe many of you discovered what the Athena fac dance was worth to you as well. How else would you Athenians have put up such an unforgettable performance? Though i didnt manage to see you guys dance i've no doubt that each and everyone on of you Athenians gave it your all. Be it shouting your hearts out. Cheering your throat dry. Or Dancing your night away. And do not be mistaken, your all WAS enough. Enough to make all your FacCom members proud. Enough to make your DICs proud. Enough to make the newly established Athena Identity(thats you guys) proud. And hopefully, Enough to make YOU proud. Now that orientation official comes to a close and the mugging(well more so for the J2s) etc begins, we hope we've left an indelible impression on you guys too. Cos you guys definitely have done so on us.

And dont be disheartened we didn't clinch the title this year. In fact congratulate all your apollo friends on their victory! They did put up a heck of a show too.

Aiya, we would just like to thank you for being such a good sport and gracing our Fac Dance practices. Learning it diligently. Enduring with all the setbacks we faced, such as our venue getting koped like THREE times. Enduring my lameness. >.< And for that last dance outside the auditorium, without any music. That was a moment to keep.

DEAREST ALL!

First and foremost, we would like to thank everyone for being very supportive of the faculty dance sessions! KEEP IT THAT WAY!

In four more days, it will be Post-Orientation-Party (POP)!

Although four days isn't a very long time, it is ample to master our fac dance!

Trust in yourself and especially the ones around you. We have all seen what we could achieve when we're united as one. That spirit is truly incomparable, undefeatable.

Always remember, the present is ours to create, and the future is in our hands.

Dear ATHENIANS!

For the past week, history has been rewritten, and legends have been born.

Yes, we might not have grabbed any firsts or seconds. We have not received material, physical incentives that could boost our ego or morale. But, our spirit is higher than it is ever before.

Other faculties might have claimed the titles. But our spirit surpasses all. This never dying spirit is all it takes to be the admiration of all. Take pride, for we don't need any external stimulus to make us high. We depend solely on our spirit, and our spirit alone to keep going. And, we are NEVER going to stop.

We aren't sure if legends are created or born. But what we know is that we are legendary. Let it be told that against all adversity, we trudged on. Against resistance, we continued running, and picked up our pace.

We will never falter, our SPIRIT will never die.

Yanyan from 6J, and Matthew from 64 are crowned with the honour of being Athena Idols of 2008. Yanyan delivered a beautiful cover of Stefanie Sun's 天黑黑 while Matthew serenaded his own remix, entitled GCmix, which comprises Leaving on a Jet Plane, Vegas Skies, My Intepretation and Always Be My Baby.

Let's wish them all the best in preparing for Hwa Chong Idol.

Athena Idol was held today in LT3 at 2.15pm today. It was fun and entertaining. Every single one the performance was superb, it was a tough decision between all the competitors.

To those who were just this close to becoming our Athena Idol, please don't give up. YOU GUYS ROCK! Jiayou for your future endeavours.

Instructions for the Top 7 Finalists!

For the 7 contestants who have successfully made it to the next round, here's what you have to do!

1) Decide on the song you want to sing this Thursday, burn it into a CD and pass the CD to Wilson (your Athenian Fac. Head in case you didn't know :P), BY WED 15th OCT!

2) Turn up at 1.30pm on Thursday, 16th Oct, for a short rehearsal of your performance. (It's the only rehearsal chance you'll get so make sure you turn up !)

3) Athena Idol starts at 2.30pm, so ready yourself to perform and sing like you've never sung before!

The day you've been eagerly waiting for has finally arrived! Hwa Chong Idol: Athena Internal Auditions (aka HCI:AIA) will be held from 4pm to 6.20 pm at A201 today, 13th Oct 2008. All participants are reminded to show up or risk getting disqualified.

athena graduation day!

This is my first post here. Pardon my random thoughts and bad english. It's totally my style, my class knows it. LOL.

I am going to add on to the previous post. I have helped out for both thursday and friday for Apollo's and Athena's graduation day. Looking at the seniors, I was just wondering how time flies and it will soon be the current J1s' turn. (OKAY, provided we get promoted.) It seems like we were having orientation yesterday.

I must say athena's one was really inspiring and reflective. especially Huiping's and Guojie's speech. It was not only funny and interesting. When I was listening to them, I believed that the J2s will nod in agreement and the J1s will be inspired.

I can imagine how we will feel next year when we look at our photo montages. (I must say some of the montages of athena classes were professionally done this year. They were super good.)

Going back to the speech by the senior fac heads, Huiping said something that made me want to blog about it. It goes something like this: "at the end of the day, it's not the fac points that matter most to us". It made me feel even more that Athena's is a very special faculty. It's not that we never won fac shield that makes us special.

We have nothing to lose. EVERY YEAR. I think that is why we can enjoy every single school event. Fac points is really nothing to us.

I really enjoyed FOS and I will smile to myself everytime I looked back at it. I believe it's the same for my class. We have no strong teams. We just tried our best and had alot of fun. I have more people to play volleyball with me in the future.

Looking at the J2 graduation this year, I strongly feel the bonds and memories of this faculty. It's different. I am not sure in which aspect...

I guess for every batch, our memories will not be winning the fac shield, but just purely spending time with each other. Look back, laugh and cherish.

The year wasn't smooth, I guess everyone was trying to get use to JC, but I am very glad that I have friends around me.

I am starting to love my class and the faculty even more. Let's make the rest of our journey as Athenians a memorable one. (:

Winning is a bonus, but having fun is a must.

Anw, I think we have very nice seniors, remember to wish them all the best for their upcoming A levels.

Last but not least, look out for the upcoming faculty outing. (:

Hey GREENIES!

Thanks for fighting it all out during FOS. We've witnessed pure courage, and strength in face of adversity. And, I'm proud to announce that all of our teams showed up for their matches.

THANK YOU ALL

I'm also proud to announce that we got CHAMPIONS in 3 out of the 7 sports! This is achievement extremely worthy of praise! Congratulations to the soccer, floorball and basketball teams. Your legacy will be remembered.

We'd also like to take this opportunity to especially thank those who have made it even more extra special, those who trained just for FOS, your dedication and effort is thoroughly appreciated :)

Well, now, we're waiting for the final results. We might feel uncertain.

But judging from our performance today, we'd say we all have already won.

Winning, is not all about scoring points, or winning trophies. Neither is it about having smug faces after a match, nor looking down on others. It's about the grace, the determination, the will to FIGHT.

Study Guide!

Hey greenfolk!

Hope you liked "the box"!

All the best for your promotional exams! For some of us, it's literally the most major exam after our uhh... PSLE.

Some study tips!

1. Good Environment

A good environment ensures conducive learning! Different people has different tastes with respect to this. It's rather easy to know whether you are "in-sync", it occurs when you just feel that there's a 'flow'. Some people get it easily, for others, it might take some time to set in. For me personally, i need loud music to disconnect myself from whatever is happening around me and get the flow going. After that, as long as i have minimal disturbance, the 'flow' would continue.

2. Minimal Distractions

Continuing on the idea of 'flow', make sure there is minimal disturbances that would steer you entirely away from what you're studying. Sometimes, even small petty chats could extend to an hour or so, so when you're studying with friends, do remember your priorities! It's really hard, but try your best to stay focused.

3. Set a rigid, but practical target

Before starting on a new topic, remember to set a target. That is, what you'd like to achieve in a certain period of time, it'll ensure more efficient learning, and it's better if you have a lot of revision to do and minimal time as it helps organize your learning times into specific slots, and it gets your mind and body prepared. Always remember to be practical when setting these targets. Don't allow too much, but too little might cause your learning to be shortchanged because you tend to feel more anxious when you're short on time. Strike a good balance.

4. Taking breaks

Although it might seem as if you're wasting time, breaks are an integral part of studying. It allows your mind to have a "cooling off" period. During this time, you could start piecing all the abstract pieces together to ensure that everything is well understood. It could also be a good time for using the washroom.

5. Ensure everything is within reach

This includes basic necessities like water, calculators, stationery, notes. Everything has to be placed within reach.

6. Don't delay, don't drag, when in doubt, clarify immediately

When you are stuck at a problem for an extremely long time, skip that question first, and attempt others. When you're done with others, look at them again. If you're still mystified, consult a friend, or book a consultation slot with your teacher to clarity your queries. Don't forget to jot down those points you'd like to ask as they might be fleeting questions, which are conceptually important.

7. Enough rest

This is extremely important, and precedes all other actions. Make sure you have enough rest before you start studying! Else, it would just be a sleepy, unproductive affair!

We're Officially Here!

So, we're officially here. In the blogosphere.

I struggled with what would be the first official post. It should be prolific after all this time, right? Grand in nature. Broad in scope. So, I struggled. How would we start this faculty blog? I struggled some more. And then I realized it’s just like walking into a room full of people you’ve never met - we’ll introduce ourselves to you. It seems like the polite thing to do, right?

First the faculty. We are the Athena Faculty – the faculty which won War Games two years running ('07 and '08) and the Boy's Cross Country Championships '08.

That’s it. You get the gist of what the faculty has achieved. Enough ‘faculty babble’. If you want to read more about the faculty, explore the various links made readily accessible to you. That will tell you everything you need to know about the faculty; our faculty committee, the faculty councilors, updates on upcoming events (ad hoc and formal) and much more miscellaneous information.

This space isn’t about that. This space is about people. People who have an unbreakable bond due to all of us belonging to the faculty of Athena. People here in this committee are fervent about planning events and leading for the welfare of our fellow Athenians. We are a passionate group of people. You’ll learn more about us – not the faculty, the people behind it.

There will be no shortage of passion in this blog. Sometimes you may agree with us, sometimes not. We want to hear from you. Anytime and all the time. We can’t wait for the conversations to start! What we do ask is that you respect the space. Constructive criticism is welcome, slander is not. Profanity is not. Basically, please don’t say something here that you wouldn’t say in one of our living rooms. We would appreciate that.
